Abstract:
In digital data transmission, a considerable gain in power efficiency can be obtained without sacrificing bandwidth by expanding the signal space of the modulator and coding the data. In this paper it is shown why it is desirable to have rotationally invariant coding, i.e., coding that is transparent to signal phase rotations of a multiple of the symmetry angle of the signal space. Then it is shown how rotationally invariant codes for MPSK modulation can be designed and what additional complexity is needed to obtain rotational invariance without losing coding gain. A six state code and an eight state code, which are of importance in practical applications, are presented.
