Sensing Communications for 6G wireless systems

Background

6G wireless systems are expected to combine sensing and communication capabilities in a single communication platform – Sensing Communications. The platform will utilize existing physical signaling and/or integrated radar technology components in a distributed fashion to satisfy new 6G applications with stringent latency and reliability requirements (i.e. services such as virtual and augmented reality). Thus, our devices will become fully intelligent and autonomously connected and for that we need to develop sensing and communication platform supported by automated decisions at the sub-second scale. Designing such wireless sensing platform needs to consider development of new techniques as a combination of traditional signal processing and machine learning to enable applications such as communications control and optimization methodologies.

Description:

At the Chair of Distributed Signal Processing (within the Institute for Communication Technologies and Embedded Systems) we have several offers for master thesis to develop novel technologies related to Sensing Communications in particular related to advancement of physical-layer signal processing and machine learning.

Tasks

We are looking into several aspects of developing algorithms and validation via computer simulation or prototype. Some example of the tasks are follows:

  • Developing novel signal waveforms to enable sensing capability in existing wireless protocols
  • Study on limitations of sensing communications with respect to latency and reliability
  • Search for novel combination of traditional signal processing and machine learning methodologies for advanced analytics and communicatio

Requirements

Depending on the actual task, the following is essential:

  • Good programming skills in C and C++ (object oriented programming)
  • Experience with traditional optimization and machine learning techniques (Python can be learned in a short time)
  • Good understanding of the physical layer processing for communications
  • Experience with ns-3 simulator and implementation in software define radio is nice to have
